Care and Cleaning of your Tin Work
Your purchase will arrive polished and finished. Some people like to
let tin work age and darken naturally (antique), and others prefer to keep
it shiny. We've included these instructions to help you keep your piece in
museum condition:
- Please remember that some of the design elements on your purchase
may be sharp. Corners with points can draw blood if improperly handled.
- Fingerprints stick to tin and copper, so if you can avoid touching
the front surface, please do. It may help to use a dishtowel or dust rag
to touch your tin art if you need to move it.
- Dust with a dry cloth and without any cleaning solutions.
- You may use any glass cleaner to clean the mirror or glass parts of
a piece, but try not to allow this cleaner to get on the tin or copper.
- Switchplates, outlet covers and nightlights--especially if they are
copper-- can be easily kept clean with steel wool and a
fresh spraying of clear lacquer.
- Periodically, your tin or copper pieces may need to be polished.
Both metals are polished first with 0 steel wool and finally with 00
steel wool. Steel wool polishing should be done in one direction, not in
a circular motion.
- Tin is finished by waxing with Turtle Wax or other standard auto
polish.
- Copper, however, needs to be periodically polished (as above) and
sprayed with clear lacquer or clear UV protectant.
- While we strive to make our work indestructible, please remember
that your item is art and should be treated with care.
- If tin work is allowed to flap in the wind, solder points could
weaken and eventually break, allowing your piece to fall.
- On almost all of our mirrors, we leave the top side of the mirror
case open so that if the mirror is broken it can easily be replaced.
- Dropping tinwork can bend corners, break solder points, or
otherwise damage your piece beyond repair.
- The artist signs her work. If this signature is not something
you wish to have present, the signature can easily be removed with
solvent, steel wool or cleanser.
